Our Classes

Your journey to parenthood is an exciting prospect and we wish to equip you with all the necessary resources to make it a positive and rewarding experience. We feel that informal sessions encourage a relaxed approach and allow for questions, without compromising the content.  Our antenatal classes will be delivered by Hattie and Charlotte. Our yoga session will be led by midwife and Pregnancy Yoga Instructor, Harriet Birtwistle.

All antenatal classes are led by experienced midwives who each have their own young children and plenty of parenting experience. Classes include structured core content that is delivered alongside bespoke elements responding to the needs voiced by women in each group. In addition to midwife-led classes, WhatsApp groups will be available to encourage networking and friendship.

A ‘Meet the Babies’ session is organised once all babies have been delivered and recovery has taken place. This session gives new parents and babies the chance to meet each other and the opportunity to arrange the playdates and gatherings that promote life-long friendships (this is subject to rules during the Covid-19 pandemic and is currently for our face to face courses).

Course Content

Our courses are packed with information about labour, birth and pain relief, and we address practical parenting skills including nappy changing, expressing and storing breastmilk, safe bottle feeding, bathing your baby, safe sleeping (to name a few). The course also aims to help you understand the roles of those caring for you, some of the medical lingo you will probably encounter, and responses when things deviate from normal. We feel preparation is key, so you don’t get faced with options and decisions during your journey that you wish you had known about before.

My Baby Class conducted research into ideal content for antenatal classes and combined it with our beliefs and experience about what women should know; inspiring us to create this high-quality programme of Antenatal Classes.

It is important that there are not too many people, as this affects your ability to ask questions and get to know the others. Each course has up to 10 women and the option for a partner/birth partner each.

The Colostrum Collection Class

In your last few weeks of pregnancy? Missed attending our antenatal classes but would like a 1:1 session on colostrum collection?

Colostrum Collection is the collection of the first milk, in pregnancy. This is recommended from 37 weeks pregnant (for some women your health professional may advise you otherwise.) Colostrum has many beneficial elements, particularly the antibodies which are there to help protect your baby against infections and illness.

This session aims to provide you with information surrounding colostrum, including breast anatomy, what is colostrum, how to collect, why collecting is recommended, the health benefits of colostrum to the infant and storage of colostrum. It is a useful skill for all women intending to breastfeed and once learnt could have a hugely positive impact on your feeding journey. Obtaining the colostrum in pregnancy, means that the supply is available should you need it once baby has arrived. There are specific situations where colostrum collecting comes highly recommended, for example diabetic women, those having an elective caesarean and those expecting a baby with a cleft lip/palate.

Our session comes complete with all the equipment you will need for collecting colostrum.

45 minute session – £45.

For availability, please contact Hattie.

If you are unsure about your individual suitability for attending this course, please check with your midwife/obstetrician/health professional first.

FAQs

When should I book the course for?

Ideally, you would start classes between 28–34 weeks. Check out the Bookings page for dates. If you would like 1:1 classes, or you and friend are both pregnant and want to do them together, then please contact us to discuss.

Who should I do the classes with?

We recommend that your partner/birth partner joins you for the sessions. It is very beneficial for you to have a supportive person who is on this journey with you. In joining the sessions, they also will gain a greater understanding of the labour and birth process, caring for a new baby and how best to support you during the whole process.

What are you offering during Covid-19 pandemic?

An essential part of the My Baby Class vision was to connect you with others on this same journey face to face, facilitating new friendships. We wanted classes that were fun, highly interactive where you gained a wealth of knowledge and could ask any questions you wanted to our teachers, who have first-hand experience as midwives and as mothers. For now, we will try to replicate this virtually, and as soon as deemed safe and sensible, we will move to face to face sessions. Until then, we will endeavour to make them as interactive, informative, fun and sociable as possible.
